Where does it go?
If
you are a carpet recycling participant, you may have wondered what
becomes of the carpet when it is re-purposed. It’s pretty
simple. Most carpet fibers are made from petroleum based plastics.
Upon removal the used carpet is sorted by fiber type and then baled
into cubes for transport. Each fiber type goes to a different plastics
industry. The carpet is shredded, ground and separated. The pile
fibers of the carpet are then processed and pelletized for re-use.
Polypropylene
is typically used for construction grade plastics like irrigation
systems. Nylons can be turned into similar products or re-spun into
yarns for new carpeting.
